All serious football players have swagger in his stats. As a kid grew up in Asia who doesn’t know much about American football, it is amazing to know that most of the high school football kids memorize their play stats by heart. And that was the origin of this project – build a visualization tool for football kids to compare against one another, or even pro athletes.

For me, as the lead developer, the major challenge was to analyze massive amount of data from different sources, and then present the data comparisons in a elegant yet meaningful way. Here is a video produced by R/GA to showcase the final result:

PROJECT SUMMARY

Nike Football’s Head2Head tool allows users to compare themselves to any player, at any level, at any stage of their career. By simply entering his name, a player can create an instant visualization of his stats versus any opponent – high school, college or pro. Then, using the comparison as motivation, he can launch one of several video tutorials featuring the NFL’s best players. The result is a platform that lets players see how they stack up in their position, and then gives them the means to get better at it.

To produce instant stat visualizations for any player virtually anywhere in the country, a tremendous amount of data needs to be trafficked. Head2Head achieved a seamless experience by leveraging partnerships with two of the world’s premier stat management companies, Max Preps and Stats.com. It also leveraged relationships with the NFL’s premier athletes to create position-specific videos users can download to an iPod and take out to the practice field.
